Arrival by Amtrak train places you in the heart of downtown Kirkwood. Just 20 minutes from St. Louis’ Gateway Arch, historic and charming downtown Kirkwood offers an almost endless list of places to explore and experiences to enjoy. Friendly volunteers at Kirkwood Train Station will be happy to direct you to your destination or make suggestions based on your interests
Downtown Kirkwood is home to dozens of unique businesses. Discover inviting and locally-owned restaurants featuring outdoor dining, one-of-a-kind interiors, and house specialties. You’ll find them amongst unique boutiques, makers’ shops, home décor stores, and professional offices. If you have a sweet tooth, you will enjoy our collection of bakeries, coffee houses, ice cream, frozen custard and gelato shops, flavored popcorn, locally crafted candies, and more!
From the Kirkwood Train Station (built in 1893 and on the National Register of Historic Places), you can walk to the bustling Kirkwood Farmers’ Market and the world-renowned museum for children — The Magic House. Kirkwood Farmers’ Market and The Magic House are open almost every day. Both of these destinations offer varied seasonal activities. Kirkwood Farmers’ Market vendors offer the best seasonal produce, plants, and locally produced items. The farmers’ market turns into a Pumpkin Patch and Fun Zone in October and a Christmas Tree Lot and Gingerbread Shoppe for the holiday season. The Magic House offers rotating special exhibits along with their highly regarded hands-on activities:
Also within walking distance from the Kirkwood Amtrak Station is the beautiful new Kirkwood Performing Arts Center (KPAC). The KPAC opened in 2021 to rave reviews and it is home to STAGES St. Louis and Kirkwood Theatre Guild. Culture lovers can view upcoming performances and find more information about KPAC on the City of Kirkwood website
Bicyclists can make reservations to bring their bike on the train and connect with the Grant’s Trail network or enjoy a ride on bike-lane marked streets to one of Kirkwood’s many beautiful parks. A popular option is a ride through the naturally beautiful and architecturally interesting Sugar Creek area that connects Kirkwood Park and the Frank Lloyd Wright House at Ebsworth Park.
